This year, the Jubilee Pool in Penzance, Cornwall celebrates its 75th Birthday. The seawater pool opened to much acclaim in the summer of 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V and is one of the few remaining Art Deco lidos in the entire country. Jutting out into Mounts Bay, it is one of the great engineering wonders in the world of outdoor swimming and one of Cornwalls most famous landmarks. Designed to deflect the full ferocity of the Cornish seas, the pool is triangular in shape. Many say it resembles a boat with its prow facing out towards the sea but Captain Latham, the pools designer, compared its shape to that of a seagull seen alighting on the water. Hailed as an Art Deco masterpiece, the Jubilee Pool was awarded Grade II listing by English Heritage in 1993 to reflect its architectural and historic importance. With its sweeping Art Deco curves and bright blue and white modernist lines, the Jubilee Pool is one of the finest examples of outdoor lidos and has often featured in many paintings by Cornwall Contemporarys artists over the years. In this anniversary year, there are many events planned to celebrate the Jubilee Pool's continued survival and growing popularity and Cornwall Contemporary is delighted to hold this special exhibition to commemorate this unique and iconic Art Deco structure. With thanks to the Randy Haunfelder and the Friends of the Jubilee Pool Sarah Brittain |
